Vouchers are the perfect ‘cop-out’ for those who leave gift shopping until the last minute or are just too busy to browse shop after shop looking for the right present. They are also a great gift to receive as, although some are for a specific item, the majority of vouchers can be redeemed on purchases for anything in the store they’ve been bought from. I loved getting a voucher as a present when I was a kid because if there wasn’t anything in the store that took my fancy I would just stand in the checkout queue and offer to knock a couple of quid off if a customer would swap cash for my voucher!
Modern Vouchers
If you consider a letter of credit as a voucher then you could say they’ve actually been around for centuries when a letter of credit from a bank or even a nobleman of high standing was just as good as cash, and even better than cash if you happen to get robbed by a highwayman or thief of the night. Cigarette pack coupons were extremely popular during the 70’s when the cigarette companies could still get away with encouraging smoking and you could pick up your free catalogue full of great goodies to redeem for your coupons. These days vouchers are available from practically every retailer, as well as other industries such as hotels, resort complexes, events organisers, promotional agents, bars, clubs and restaurants.
